To be honest most of the time i just jump straight into it, and yeah i guess it does like any other medium of that sort. But try to keep your pencil sharp as you work and build up with your lines, rather then jab the paper would be my advice. A professor of mine (Don Poynter) would say that it was good rotate the pencil clockwise with your fingers as you made lines that way your kind of sharpening as you go, but i cant do that well really.
